Unicode ondersteunende fonts [4]

In een vorige aflevering had ik al aangekondigd met een bespreking te komen van het Cyberbit font. Cyberbit - geproduceerd door Bitstream Inc. - is een van de monsterachtige fonts zoals ook de MS Arial Unicode. Monsterachtig vanwege de omvang van enige megabytes [13MB voor Cyberbit resp 23MB voor Arial] en de tijd nodig om het font te laden. En voorzover mogelijk - om het font te downloaden van het Internet. Ruim 6MB [gecomprimeerde file] downloaden is voor mijn bescheiden 28k8 modem toch iets te veel werk. Gelukkig mocht ik rekenen op de steun van Ton Ketting van het voormalige Bearboard. Via de kabelaansluiting verliep alles een stuk sneller en goedkoper. Vervolgens een CD-rom gebrand en de file opgestuurd. Ton's eigen ervaring met het font op de PC onder MS Word gaf geen aanleiding tot vreugde. Toch had ik al eerder van Rainer Seitel begrepen dat het font onder NVDI op een simpele TT moest kunnen worden gebruikt. En dat met slechts 4+4 MB geheugen??

Nog niet in het bezit zijnde van een CD-rom werd de file bij Ronald van der Kamp uitgepakt en op een Syquest EZ135 schijf gezet en daarna terug naar huis vervoerd. Met behulp van NVDI's font-cache CPX werd een aparte font-directory ingesteld waar ook het Cyberbit font op aanwezig was - op de EZ135 - en werd de cache verhoogd van 192 naar 1500 [zoals Rainer Seitel dat had aangeraden].

Nu was het de beurt aan de enkele Atari-programma's die met Unicode kunnen omgaan en dus met name: Arkus 3 en Papyrus 7.5. Waar Arkus3 geen problemen had met fonts als Tahoma en Lucida Sans Unicode - zowel bij het vinden en bij de display van de lettertekens - bleek Cyberbit iets teveel van het goede. In het font-keuzevenster was Cyberbit aanwezig maar na het aanklikken van de naam was het gelijk schluss - zonder foutmelding gecrashed.

Papyrus daarentegen had niet echt een probleem - slechts een lange adempauze om het font binnen te halen - en liep verder daarna soepel. Het aantal met Papyrus ingesteld groepen lettertekens binnen het font had niet gerekend op exotische talen als Japans of Chinees. Het was dus even zoeken. Maar eenmaal bij de CJK-groepen [Chinese, Japanese, Korean] aangekomen kwamen ze dan ook echt te voorschijn. Zij het traag - het presenteren van een bladzijde kost enkele minuten. De diverse screendumps spreken voor zich...

Welke groepen er in het Cyberbit-font zitten heb ik zelf niet zitten uitzoeken. Alan Wood daarentegen heeft op zijn website een zeer uitgebreid overzicht van 'Unicode-fonts' gegeven. Enkele zaken wil ik hier niemand onthouden:

The number of fonts that support Unicode is slowly increasing. One of the first was Lucida Sans Unicode from Bigelow & Holmes, supplied with a pre-release SDK for Microsoft Windows NT 3.1 in March 1993. Bitstream have also had an experimental Unicode font, CyberBit, for several years. The core fonts (Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New) for Windows platforms were converted to Unicode when Microsoft changed to the 16-bit WGL4 character set (652 characters) in place of the 8-bit ANSI character set (256 characters), and the numbers of characters in these fonts has continued to increase. Many of Microsoft's operating systems and applications come with additional Unicode fonts, and Office 2000 includes Arial Unicode MS, which includes all of the characters in version 2.0 of the Unicode standard. There are even shareware Unicode fonts, such as Code2000.

Zoals Alan het formuleert - en dat blijkt ook wel - is het Cyberbit font verleden tijd - je vindt het niet meer op de website van Bitstream Inc. Vergelijkbare fonts - ook van Bitstream zijn te vinden:

Zelf heb ik gemerkt dat b.v. de Latin-2 niet echt compleet aanwezig waren, zij het gelukkig wel al mijn Poolse tekens. Arial Sans Unicode is niet op een of andere manier te downloaden. Het wordt slechts geleverd via de MicroSoft pakketen: Office 2000 en FrontPage2000. Het Code2000 font moet vrij verkrijgbaar zijn. Alan vermeld wel de vindplaats maar niet hoe groot het font is - 13MB zal niet ver er van af zitten.
