When the first Atari showed up it was a common thing to work in text-mode and a graphical mode could only be found with Macintosh computers. What text-mode did imply was that the characters both on screen and in print were dependend of what these output devices could handle as far as resolution and availability goes. The rudely dotted PC-screens and also the 9-pins needle-printers dominated the computer output. You could immediately tell a computer print what a normal typewriter print-out. Any variations in typefaces depended on what could be shown on screen or on how the printer could be driven. It's not surprising that the first Atari programs were quite like the PC ones.

Dat bemoeilijkte een echte What you see is what you get op papier.

The available monitors for Atari [SM124, 125] were of an amazing quality - both as to the high refreshment rate as well as to the high resolution. The moment 24-pins needle-printers appeared it was obvious that the graphic mode both for the screen and the printer would break through and would pave the way for a greater variety of typefaces. Alas, because of a difference in resolution separate font-files would be needed for the screen and the printer. This would make a real What you see is what you get on paper rather difficult.
